Bass Players – All time greatest Blues/Jazz/Swing

This topic came up a few times in conversation, so, Bri, pay attention, I might throw a test.   And for your benefit, Bri, my bass influences are in a different colored font then the rest of the list… :)   Maybe T will repost his guitar list for you too.  LOL

  • Willie Dixon– “the poet laureate of the blues”, and “the father of modern Chicago blues”, who didn’t he work for, write for or produce? (He produced BUDDY FREAKIN GUY!! in 1959 on his return to Chess records…) He has written over 500 songs, that have been recorded by Muddy Waters, Led Zep, and the list goes on.
    I might post a list later of songs he wrote that we all love so well. :)

  • Milt Hinton –Famous for his slapping technique way back in the 1930s, he played for the Cab Calloway Band
  • Duck Dunn Booker T. & The MGs,The Blues Brothers Band, bass on Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding, and many others.
  • James Jamerson one of the most influential bassists & the father of modern bass guitar players in modern music history, he was one of the Funk Brothers, musicians recruited by Barry Gordy to play studio sessions for motown. His work includes Motown hits such as, among hundreds of others, “Shotgun” by Jr. Walker & the All Stars, “For Once in My Life”, “I Was Made To Love Her” by Stevie Wonder, “Going to a Go-Go” by The Miracles, “My Girl” by The Temptations, “Dancing in the Street” by Martha and the Vandellas, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and later by Marvin Gaye, and most of the album What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and “Bernadette” by The Four Tops, and “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes.
  • Tommy Shannon SRV and Double Trouble, played on Johnny Winter’s The Progressive Blues Experiment, Other notable projects included the Arc Angels with Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton, and Storyville with Malford Milligan. He toured with Susan Tedeschi and, along with Chris Layton, toured & recorded with Kenny Wayne Shepherd. He and Layton played on Jimmy D. Lane’s “It’s Time”. He has played with other notable musicians including Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Hubert Sumlin, Mike McCready, Johnny Lang, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Johnson, David Grissom, Mato Nanji, Jeff Beck and John Mayer.
  • David Biscuit Miller Lonnie Brooks; Anthony Gomes
  • Roscoe Beck Robben Ford and the Blue Line; recorded with Leonard Cohen, Robben Ford, Jennifer Warnes, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani Robben Ford, blues legend James Cotton, Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson, and David Grissom, with vocalists Mike Cross, Malford Milligan, Omar Dykes, Ruthie Foster, Jacqui Cross, and Steve Vai.
